Two men who hate each other. One impossible mission. A legend in the making.
Hadrian Blackwater, a warrior with nothing to fight for, is paired with Royce Melborn, a thieving assassin with nothing to lose. Hired by an old wizard, they must steal a treasure that no one can reach. The Crown Tower is the impregnable remains of the grandest fortress ever built and home to the realm's most prized possessions. But it isn't gold or jewels that the wizard is after, and if he can just keep them from killing each other, they just might succeed.

After concluding his six-volume "Riyria Revelations," Sullivan (Percepliquis) here launches a prequel series explicating the earlier life of his popular fantasy duo, Hadrian and Royce, thieves extraordinaire. This first of a projected 12-book series begins at the point where thief and soldier meet and are coerced into a partnership that's initially distasteful to both. While much of the book sets up recurring characters and listeners know they will survive, adventure is key, there's plenty of humor, and the plot moves at a satisfying pace. Tim Gerard Reynolds, a familiar voice to those who have listened to the previous books, turns in another satisfying performance. VERDICT A fine starting point for listeners new to the series and fun for all epic fantasy lovers.--Janet Martin, Southern Pines P.L., NC
