This informative title explores what a den is and the various types that are used or built by animals. Large photographs are used to show the different animals that dwell in dens like bobcats, river otters, Alaska marmots, Arctic wolf pups and more. Each page spread has a simple sentence followed by facts about the animal. The title also includes a comprehension quiz and glossary. Sandcastle is an imprint of ABDO Publishing Company.

Gr 1-2-This set places boxed text over clear, bright photographs that cover every spread. Each title begins by describing the particular home as well as which animals live there. Then seven different creatures that inhabit the respective places are portrayed. Nest, for example, offers information on four types of birds, two types of insects, and alligators. The writing is strong with a lot of information divulged in short sentences. Many pictures showcase the subjects' most appealing aspects, such as an adorable red fox peaking out of its den and a tree frog staring wide-eyed from its perch. However, in Cave a not-so-endearing vampire bat bares its fangs. Back matter includes quizzes with true-or-false questions that can be answered by reading the texts. Basic information for beginning readers.

Each volume begins with a very brief introduction, helping explain what types of animals call the title dwelling home. Several examples are provided; the texts, while easy to read, usually give just one or two details about the creatures. Vivid close-up photographs are eye-catching. The last page pointlessly asks: "Could you live in a [name of animal home]?" Quizzes are appended. Glos.
