Returning to work after an extended leave of absence, Detective Constable Hazel Best's first task is to shadow TV historian Oliver Ford, who has arrived in Norbold to open a new museum. What should have been a routine assignment takes a decidedly dramatic turn, however, when Hazel saves Ford from a murderous attack that would appear to be an act of jihad. But why would someone fly thousands of miles to firebomb an obscure little museum in a quiet English village? Hazel can't help but think that there's something more to this case than meets the eye. Meanwhile, Hazel's friend Gabriel Ash and her lodger Saturday are growing increasingly uneasy at Hazel's developing relationship with Oliver-but neither of them can guess at the real danger that Hazel faces nor the direction from which it will come...

Narrator Jane Copland convincingly captures Detective Constable Hazel Best, who is injured while protecting selfish celebrity Oliver Ford. Best and her friend, Gabriel Ash--wonderfully portrayed as a kind, unlikely hero--team up to determine whether the crime was terrorist related. Listeners will be chagrined when Best falls in love with Ford. Copland expertly re-creates myriad accents as the lovers travel to Africa and the Middle East. Sunday, a troubled youth whom Best took in, helps Ash on his quest. It's fascinating to hear Sunday's youthful hacking skills help the older Ash. The most fun comes from the spirited Franny, a Filipino housekeeper hired by Ash who is wise and hilarious. Also entertaining is the adorable dog Patience, who "talks" to Ash. An unexpected ending cries for resolution. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine

In Bannister’s thoughtful fourth mystery featuring former government security analyst Gabriel Ash and Constable Hazel Best (after 2015’s Desperate Measures), Middle East native Rachid Iqbal, armed with a weaponized spray can, turns up in the English town of Wittering during the opening of the new Museum of the Crusades. Best is there to protect historian Oliver Ford, a TV personality who’s speaking at the event. When Iqbal approaches Ford, Best recognizes the danger and pushes Ford out of harm’s way. Ford later charms Best, and soon she’s in his thrall. Her faithful friend, Gerald Ash, and Saturday, the 17-year-old boy who boards at Best’s home, find Ford’s odd behavior suspect. Are their suspicions founded? Meanwhile, is Iqbal a terrorist, or was his attack more personal? This book can be enjoyed on its own, but those new to the series may wish to check out earlier entries to learn more about the principals, such as how the platonic friendship between Best and Ash evolved and what created the empathy and kindness that allowed Best to take in Saturday. Agent: Jane Gregory, Gregory & Company (U.K.).
