Packed with honor, bravery, and intrigue, Jack Higgins' fast-moving thrillers consistently burst onto best-seller lists on both sides of the Atlantic. In this multi-layered story of revenge and suspense, a brutal death in Brooklyn sends shocking repercussions around the world. When journalist Katherine Johnson learns too much about crime boss Jack Fox, he silences her once and for all. But he doesn't reckon with her ex-husband Blake Johnson, a former FBI agent with formidable British connections. Intent on hitting Fox where it hurts most, Blake unleashes his own deadly brand of vengeance—destroying Fox's illegal holdings from New York to the Middle East. A master storyteller, Jack Higgins captivates fans with his pulse-pounding action and surprises around every corner. Many of his books have been made into popular movies. Frank Muller provides the perfect voice for the determined Blake and his powerful enemies.

There's a jaunty, even slapdash feel to the storytelling in Higgins's exciting new novel featuring his longtime antihero, Sean Dillon. And that's fine. The clipped dialogue and minimal exposition suit their subject well, for Dillon--once the IRA's most feared enforcer, now working for British secret police--and his cohorts are men (and, occasionally, women) of few words and swift action. Higgins's new plot is as direct as his characters. The journalist wife of Dillon's old comrade Blake Johnson is killed in Brooklyn on orders of her latest object of investigation, Jack Fox, heir apparent to the powerful Solazzo crime family. The law can't touch Fox, but Blake and Dillon can and will. Aided by Dillon's black-ops boss, Brigadier Charles Ferguson, and his crew, plus a father/son team of British gangsters, Blake and Dillon strike again and again at Fox's wallet: shutting down his London gambling den; sinking a boat laden with his gold; destroying a cache of his weapons in Ireland; foiling his plans for a major robbery in London. A subplot in which Fox's uncle, the Solazzo don, spies on his nephew with increasing displeasure adds dimension to the linear narrative and leads to a clever denouement. The action is sleek and intensely absorbing, but the supreme pleasure is in those Higgins celebrates--tarnished warriors who value honor over life and who get the job done no matter what the cost. Jack Higgins brings back a familiar cast of characters in this latest Sean Dillon-Blake Johnson adventure. Patrick Macnee, who voiced THE PRESIDENT'S DAUGHTER and several other Higgins novels, also makes a welcome return. Macnee's voice conveys action with breathless excitement, easing back for light touches, such as the description of the calm rat that watches Johnson in an underground prison. Macnee's voice is backed up by extensive sound effects--the squeaking rat, rain and explosions, to name a few. The effects usually blend in well under the narration but occasionally get in the way, such as the sounds of gunfire that precede Macnee's narration of a battle late in the tape. J.A.S. Jack Higgins's thrillers are always fast- moving and filled with intrigue. In this novel, masterfully read by Frank Muller, former FBI agent and White House aide Blake Johnson seeks revenge for the murder of his ex-wife by Jack Fox, a suspected crime boss. After learning of his wife's brutal death, Johnson works with his connections in Ireland and the Middle East to create a plan that extracts economic (and psychological) vengeance on Fox, slowly destroying his worldwide gambling and smuggling empire. As usual, Higgins's story is filled with action, and Muller's timing, coupled with his uncanny ability to give every character the right voice, enhances the story and keeps it going toward its dramatic conclusion.
