Superheroes don't start from glorious beginnings. Their origins are almost always marked by traumatic events that leave them helpless and scared. Batman witnessed his parents' murder. Superman was sent away from his dying planet with no one to guide him as he grew up. Orphaned Catwoman was forced to steal food to survive on the streets of Gotham. What makes these superheroes super is their determination to not be defined by helplessness. They embrace their origins, their flaws, and their mistakes, and strive every day to become the best versions of themselves-for the benefit of themselves and others.

Emily Gordon's narration sounds like a charming combination of a one-woman stage show and the kind of chatty talk you hear at a Starbucks. With energetic pacing and informal language, the former therapist zeroes in on the various self-identifications that shape the way people operate in the world and face their challenges. She draws on the identities of familiar superheroes (Superman, Wonder Woman, etc.) to show how we can define ourselves with more clarity and strength. Though it's Gordon's energy and resilience that fuel her connection with her audience, the production is also packed with valuable tools and practical ideas that will help listeners deal with life's ordinary challenges and personal adversities.
